ATG BRINGS THE BEST OF THE FRINGE TO THE WEST END WITH "EDINBURGH EXPORTED" AT THE NEW AMBASSADORS

Issued : 3 September 2004

Did you miss the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year? Or did you go to Edinburgh and spend all your time in the pub? Well fear not! The Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) is delighted to bring the best of the Fringe Festival right into the heart of the West End with EDINBURGH EXPORTED at the New Ambassadors Theatre.

Featuring the biggest and best of Fringe talent, this brand new month-long season runs from Thursday 9th September – Saturday 9th October 2004. Each night, there’ll be a theatre show at 7:30pm and most nights this will be followed by a comedy or cabaret show at 9:30pm.

Theatre productions include the witty and surreal comedy The Translucent Frogs of Quuup, which makes its West End debut following a hugely successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe. Writer and director Chris Larner is well known for his work with The Right Size, including The Play What I Wrote, Do You Come Here Often? and Bewilderness.

Population: 3 bring their all-new comedy spectacle The Elephant Woman to the New Ambassadors. Inspired by the Seventies cult film The Elephant Man, The Elephant Woman unfolds the extraordinary tale of Miss Anella Phant – a mixture of woman and elephant who became known as “The Greatest Freak in the World!”.

After a critically acclaimed sell-out run at the Fringe, Glyn Cannon’s Gone - a stirring contemporary take on Sophocles’ Antigone - will receive its West End premiere. Cannon updates the Greek tragedy to the age of spin and shock-and-awe, drawing inspiration from sources as disparate as television gloss, war briefings and crude protest.

The Comedy of Arias is an irresistible goulash of love and betrayal simmering with Opera’s greatest hits and comes to the New Ambassadors as part of the EDINBURGH EXPORTED season. This mad cap mixture of heart wrenching music and riotous comedy includes favourites such as Granada, Nessun dorma and the Pearlfisher’s duet.

As if that’s not all, there’s top comedy from Ed Byrne (with Me Again), Scott Capurro, Lee Mack, Richard Herring (with The Twelve Tasks of Hercules Terrace), Jason Byrne (with That’s Not A Badger!), The Consultants, Jimeoin, Brendon Burns and Craig Hill (with One Man and His Kilt!) to name just a few!

ATG is currently the second largest theatre group both in the West End and separately, in the UK regions, with a total of 23 venues. It is also one of the country's foremost theatre producers and has been behind some of the most successful and innovative productions in Britain and internationally, including Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker! and Kristen Scott Thomas in Three Sisters.

The New Ambassadors Theatre is programmed and managed by Sonia Friedman Productions and the Ambassador Theatre Group.

John Richardson, Sonia Friedman Productions:
“I am thrilled that the New Ambassadors is hosting such an exciting and innovative season. This is a unique opportunity for Londoners to sample the best theatre, comedy and cabaret shows from the Edinburgh Fringe in one West End venue. We very much hope that the success of our EDINBURGH EXPORTED season will pave the way for more of the same in years to come.”
