PIONEERING WEST END THEATRE – TRAFALGAR STUDIOS LAUNCHES SUMMER 2007 SEASON
Issued : 4 June 2007
London’s most innovative theatre venue, Trafalgar Studios, continues to push the creative boundaries, as it announces its brand new summer season for 2007.
Operated by Ambassador Theatre Group, Trafalgar Studios is attracting a wider audience to the West End, by offering highly inventive and uniquely challenging theatre. It is also a gateway for diverse and new work that may not otherwise have the opportunity to play in Central London.
This season, Studio 2 presents powerful storytelling at its best with a collection of life changing stories. The performances are moving, entertaining, hilarious and heartbreaking, and explore the themes of friendship and life reflection.
TWO MEN TALKING (5 – 23 June) is a fascinating story about the lives of two men and a remarkable chance meeting later in life.
In 1974, in Johannesburg, a teacher asks two rival schoolboys to tell one another a story. Fast forward twenty five years, Murray Nossel, now an Academy Award nominated film-maker, and Paul Browde, a psychiatrist, meet by coincidence in New York City. At that moment, a decision is made to heal their relationship and forge an extraordinary friendship. Each unscripted performance is absolutely unique in this continually transforming theatrical experience.
Following a critically acclaimed run at the Arcola Theatre, MOJO MICKYBO (27 June – 21 July) comes to Studio 2 for a limited run. Poignant, funny and unsentimental, MOJO MICKYBO tells the story of two boys growing up in Belfast in the summer of 1970, and their escape from a city overshadowed by hatred and fear.
Martin Brody and Benjamin Davies perform seventeen parts between them, in this fast-paced, colourful play, by award-winning writer Owen McCafferty, whose previous work includes Shoot the Crow (Trafalgar Studios), Scenes from the Big Picture and Closing Time (National Theatre) and Days of Wine and Roses (Donmar Warehouse).
THE AGENT (25 July – 18 August) is a deliciously dark tale by Martin Wagner, and comes to Studio 2 following a successful run at the Old Red Lion.
It’s all in a day’s work for high-flying literary agent Alexander: deals to be made, celebrity clients to be taken out for lunch… but first there is an author whose latest book he thinks is not up to scratch to deal with. However, he hadn’t counted on the author’s resourcefulness!
Continuing the theme of life reflection is Michael Morpurgo’s PRIVATE PEACEFUL (3 – 29 September), reliving the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon. This remarkable, award-winning production is back by popular demand following a sell-out tour and West End run.
The inspiration for PRIVATE PEACEFUL came from Morpurgo’s visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War. PRIVATE PEACEFUL won the Blue Peter Children’s Book of the Year 2005.
