NOISES OFF TAKES BROADWAY BY STORM
Issued : 2 November 2001
British theatre is taking Broadway by storm. Following on from the success
of musical Mamma Mia two weeks ago, it is now the turn of Michael Frayn’s classic British farce Noises Off, directed by Jeremy Sams, which opened to rave reviews last night (November 1) at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
The show, revealing the on and off stage antics of a touring theatre company, stars stage legend Patti LuPone (the original Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard) and Broadway names Peter Gallagher and Faith Prince.
It has been brought over to New York by the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) and the Royal National Theatre, co-producers of the original smash hit. This has been enjoying sell-out success in the past year both in the West End and on national tour. The UK production is currently several months into a hugely successful run at the Piccadilly Theatre where it stars Peter Egan, Chris Langham, Susie Blake and Isla Blair.
ATG Managing Director, Howard Panter said “Michael Frayn’s Noises Off is one of the 20th century’s greatest comedies – and we are bowled over by New York’s incredible response to this production. This is a true vote of confidence in quality theatre. Alongside the success of the London production it proves that when one produces shows of this stature they attract theatregoers on both sides of the Atlantic. We are delighted and honoured that in such a difficult period in Manhattan’s history we are able to bring this amazing production to the people of New York.”
This is what the critics said about Noises Off :
“Michael Frayn’s Noises Off is the funniest farce ever written. If it isn’t, tell me what is. Never before has ‘sidesplitting’ taken on a meaning dangerously close to the non-metaphorically medical.” Clive Barnes, New York Post
“In the spectacularly funny new revival of Noises Off…there are moments when everyone – onstage and in the audience – seems to be riding the same runaway roller coaster.” Ben Brantley, The New York Times
“In moments of stress, none of our allies has been more loyal than the British, and in this, one of our darkest hours, they have shown us the depth of their friendship by sending us a revival of Noises Off. “
Howard Kissel, New York Daily News
