GLASGOW CITY COUNCIL HAND OVER THE KING'S THEATRE TO THE AMBASSADOR THEATRE GROUP

On Tuesday 1 October at 11am The King’s, Glasgow was officially handed over from Glasgow City Council to Ambassador Theatre Group Ltd (ATG). ATG won the tender and takes on the management and programming of the King’s for the next twenty-one years while Glasgow City Council retains the freehold.
At the formal handover, Bailie Liz Cameron, Convenor of the Cultural & Leisure Services Committee and David Williams, the new Chief Executive of the King’s were joined by Gerard Kelly and Andy Gray who are currently starring in the acclaimed Odd Couple which plays at The King’s until the end of the week and is ATG’s first show as new managers of The King’s.
Bailie Liz Cameron said “ I am delighted that after year-long negotiations and a very competitive race to win The King’s Theatre management contract that the time has come for the Ambassador Theatre Group to take over the day to day running of the theatre.
I think it is a very exciting time for the venue and the staff and the people of Glasgow have the opportunity to sample some marvellous shows that are part of the autumn and spring programmes as well as the traditional panto at Christmas. I would like to wish The King’s my very best wishes for the future and look forward to visiting often.“
David Williams said “ I would like to thank the staff of The King's who have worked so hard over the past few months to ensure a smooth transition, and the Council for their part in enabling a future partnership that will benefit all of our audiences.
We will shortly be announcing our spring season, which will confirm our ability to present some of the finest shows currently touring the country. We look forward to welcoming audiences old and new, and encourage one and all to join our mailing list or even better our new Friends of the King’s scheme...”
The King’s will be improving services for customers making it easier to buy tickets and offering generous discount schemes and today launched its new scheme Friends of the King’s, which is the easiest way to get the best King’s seats at the lowest prices and offers advance information, priority booking, ticket discounts and special events.
In addition seven new District Publicity Assistants will be working in Glasgow and the surrounding areas providing an information and booking service for local communities.
The brand new King’s website www.kings-glasgow.co.uk (also launched today) has internet ticketing facilities and in addition to the King’s Box Office regular service it is also possible to book tickets at any time using the 24 hour Ticketmaster telephone booking service (still using the King’s number: 240 1111)
The King’s will also be running an extensive Education and Development programme. The building will undergo a rolling programme of refurbishment with essential maintenance being the priority. All King’s staff will be based in the building.
