SONIA FRIEDMAN PRODUCTIONS LAUNCHES MAJOR EXPANSION - NEW CREATIVE PRODUCER AND HEAD OF PRODUCTION APPOINTED

Issued : 26 February 2007

Sonia Friedman Productions (SFP) is set for major expansion with the appointment of Lisa Makin and Pam Skinner in the newly created roles of Creative Producer and Head of Production respectively.

The appointments will enable SFP, one of the West End’s most prolific producers, to continue presenting varied and diverse productions, but also to expand and produce larger-scale events and work beyond the West End and Broadway. Lisa will be working closely with Sonia Friedman to develop and produce a wide range of work for all scales and Pam will work with the existing SFP staff to ensure the effective and first-class management of these productions.

SFP, a subsidiary of the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), was formed in 2002 and has become one of the most dynamic, groundbreaking and prolific theatre producers in the West End and on Broadway, initiating and presenting dozens of new productions over this time. Prior to forming SFP, Sonia spent 3 years as the producer for ATG. Before joining ATG, she was the producer and co-founder of Out of Joint. From 1989 – 1993, she was the producer of Mobile Production and Theatre for Young People at the National Theatre. Since 1993, Sonia has produced over 75 major new productions.

In the last 14 months alone, and with the support of a full-time staff of just four, SFP produced 14 shows in the West End and on Broadway including Faith Healer starring Ralph Fiennes on Broadway, Rock n Roll by Tom Stoppard, Eh Joe by Samuel Beckett starring Michael Gambon, Donkeys’ Years by Michael Frayn, The Dumb Waiter by Harold Pinter and, most recently, Boeing-Boeing at the Comedy Theatre. SFP received a total of eight Olivier Award nominations this year.

Lisa Makin has been Associate Director and Head of Casting of the Royal Court Theatre, London for the last 20 years.

Pam Skinner has been Production Co-ordinator at the Really Useful Group Ltd (RUG) for the last 12 years. During her time at RUG she has supervised over 20 major Really Useful productions, not only in London, but across Europe and America, including The Phantom of the Opera (Antwerp, Mexico, Copenhagen, Sao Paulo and Madrid), The Sound of Music, Evita and The Woman in White (the latter co-produced with SFP).

Sonia Friedman said:
“I am extremely proud of SFP’s outstanding achievements and success over the last five years. I remain totally committed to producing more plays and dramas in London and New York and will stay as closely involved in all the work as ever, but now is the perfect time to develop our work further. To drive our expansion forward, I am delighted to welcome Lisa and Pam to my company. Having worked with them both over the years, I am very excited by the next phase of my company’s life, as we have in Lisa and Pam two of the most respected, dedicated and passionate people in theatre and I am extremely lucky that they have chosen to join SFP.”

Lisa Makin said:
“After 20 extremely happy years as Associate Director and Head of Casting, it has taken an extraordinary opportunity to come my way for me to consider leaving. I’m delighted and excited in equal measure to be joining SFP because I feel it will allow me to build on my successes at The Court. I’ve worked with Sonia on a number of productions over the past few years and during that time have been particularly struck by Sonia’s drive and focus and the sheer quality and diversity of her productions. We have always had a fantastic working relationship and I’m really looking forward to bringing some of my experiences to the SFP team.”

Pam Skinner said:
“I am delighted to be joining SFP at this time, as it is one of the most innovative and exciting commercial theatre companies in the country and to be part of this expansion is an amazing opportunity. I look forward to being kept extremely busy working in an immensely stimulating environment with some fantastic people on a wide range of plays and shows”.
