WIMBLEDON CANNIZARO PARK FESTIVAL 2008

Issued : 8 July 2008

Summer is here and South West London’s ultimate outdoor festival experience is gearing up for what will undoubtedly be a hugely successful 2008! Wimbledon Cannizaro Park Festival 2008 offers the best variety of live entertainment from first class comedy and world famous singers through to opera, classical music and jazz.

Opening the festival on Friday 11th July, and making a welcome return to Cannizaro for a second year, is stand-up and television favourite Jimmy Carr, as part of his brand new tour Repeat Offender.

Other comedy highlights include the award-winning stand-up comedian and self-proclaimed “confused hippy” Bill Bailey (22 July) and Grumpy Old Women team captain Jenny Eclair presents her ‘Because I Forgot To Get A Pension’ show (13 July). The Comedy Store Players, who have enjoyed massive success at previous Cannizaro festivals (26 July) are returning, as are Jongleurs Comedy Club, the name that helped launch the careers of Graham Norton, Jack Dee and many more who are returning to present the biggest and funniest acts from the comedy circuit on two separate nights with separate line-ups (17 & 24 July).

This year’s Cannizaro Festival can boast a full and varied musical programme. Iconic 80’s heartthrob Jason Donovan gives Cannizaro a sneak preview of his upcoming UK tour of new and old hits (12 July). Fabulous musical trio The Puppini Sisters are stopping by, blending their 1940s influenced blend of ‘pop and swing’ and gorgeous sense of glamour and fun (15 July).

Other acts include Britain’s top jazz performer, the supremely talented and very funny Claire Teal (18 July), One Night with Elvis: Lee ‘Memphis’ King, bringing the spirit, the soul and the jumpsuit of the King of Rock and Roll (19 July), New Zealand soprano, Hayley Westenra, who, aged just 21, has topped the UK classical charts and sold over three million copies of her debut international album (27 July). Garden Opera also present Don Pasquale, Donizetti's comic masterpiece (16 July) and festival goers will have the chance to get into the Cuban spirit and salsa the night away with Cannizaro’s Cuban night with El Guayabero (20 July). Cannizaro is also delighted to present an evening with the famous Brit School, which has taught the likes of BRIT award winners Leona Lewis, Amy Winehouse and Adele (14 July).

Cannizaro weekends are also going to be extremely popular for families, as the Polka Theatre present ‘Monkey in the Park’ taking audiences on a fun and interactive adventure as they pursue the mischievous Monkey King around Cannizaro Park (Every Sat and Sunday). Horla Theatre Company will also be presenting three classic fairy tales; perfect family entertainment packed full of cheeky humour (every Saturday). Finally, Sunday afternoons can also be spent relaxing to Lunchtime Jazz.

Shakespeare’s Globe will also be back at the Wimbledon Cannizaro Park Festival on Wednesday 23 July and Friday 25th with stunning al fresco performances of The Winter’s Tale (Weds) and Romeo & Juliet (Fri).

Brand new for 2008, is an improved seating layout, which offers festival goers a choice of covered, theatre-style seats, which are raked for optimum views, or an uncovered picnic area.

Wimbledon Cannizaro Park Festival 2008 is once again being led by Festival Director Ruth Glick, who has previously been Chief Executive of Rambert Dance, founder Administrator of the Dance Umbrella Festival and organiser of one of the first major Crusaid fundraisers at the South Bank Centre in the early 90’s.

"I'm hopeful that everyone will find something to enjoy in this year's festival of comedy, music, opera & theatre in the delightful setting of Cannizaro's Italian Garden”, she says. “I'm pleased we've been able to improve the seating arrangements, so that everyone can enjoy an excellent view of Jimmy Carr, Jason Donovan, Hayley Westenra and all the rest...Come rain or shine!"

Principal sponsor The Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) is delighted to be involved once again in producing and presenting this year’s Festival, including the management of the technical, ticketing, marketing and press aspects. The event is also sponsored by Cannizaro House, Robert Holmes and Co and the London Borough of Merton. The Media Partner is the Wimbledon Guardian.
