THE GERSHWINS’ PORGY AND BESS - NEW MUSICAL PRODUCTION, DIRECTED BY TREVOR NUNN, TO WORLD PREMIERE AT THE SAVOY THEATRE, LONDON ON THURSDAY 9 NOVEMBER

Issued : 25 July 2006

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, by George Gershwin, DuBose & Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin, will open in London at the Savoy Theatre on Thursday 9 November, following previews from 25 October. This will be the world premiere of this new musical production, which has been adapted and re-worked from an opera into a 2½ hour musical by Trevor Nunn, who will also direct. The music has been specially adapted by Gareth Valentine.

The £3 million production featuring a 60-strong company, with 40 in the cast and a 20-piece orchestra, will begin rehearsals on 4 September.

Porgy and Bess, with music by George Gershwin, lyrics by DuBose Heyward & Ira Gershwin and a book by Dubose Heyward, based on Porgy by Dubose Heyward and Dorothy Heyward, originally premiered on 10 October 1935 at the Alvin Theatre in New York in a production directed by Rouben Mamoulian. Featuring arguably one of the greatest musical scores ever written for the stage, including such classics as Summertime, I Got Plenty o’ Nothin and It Ain’t Necessarily So, the piece is regarded as one of the landmarks of 20th century American musical theatre. The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess will be produced in London by Richard Frankel, Tom Viertel, Steven Baruch, Marc Routh, Howard Panter for Ambassador Theatre Group and Tulbart Productions.
