Press Releases
Issued : 24 January 2007
The curtain has risen on the 200th anniversary celebrations for one of the oldest and most prestigious theatres in the UK.
Theatre Royal Brighton – the leading venue in the South East – officially unveiled a year of star-studded events at a glittering launch attended by leading names in the theatre industry.
The anniversary has brought together the cultural and business community who will be supporting numerous events throughout 2007. Highlights include an exhibition to be held at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, gala performances, world premieres, specially commissioned shows and party nights.
Since the Ambassador Theatre Group took ownership of Theatre Royal Brighton in 1999, the venue has gone from strength to strength bringing West End glamour to the south coast in high quality productions.
The launch of Theatre Royal Brighton Productions has added a new and exciting dimension to the theatre’s place at the heart of the community. Hugely popular shows like Sweeney Todd, Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show and The New Statesman developed new audiences and provided a welcome economic boost for the South East economy.
Theatre Royal Brighton currently receives 350,000 visitors a year, with 51% from neighbouring counties, 40% from Brighton itself and 9% travelling from London.
Julien Boast, Chief Executive of Theatre Royal Brighton, said:
“We are thrilled to mark the start of our 200th anniversary celebrations. Theatre Royal Brighton is one of the oldest working theatres in this country and the fact that we’ve survived and thrived is due to the hard work of all the people who have made a contribution here, both on stage and behind the scenes.”
Julien praised the local business community for their willingness to participate in the exciting events planned to mark the Theatre’s anniversary.
“The fact that such reputable companies have recognised the professionalism of Theatre Royal Brighton and want to align themselves with us is fantastic. Our strategic partners have donated five figure sums to our fund-raising campaign to renovate our building, as well as valuable in-kind support.
We have also had incredible support from audiences, both nationally and locally, who have enabled us to maintain our reputation as the leading venue on the south coast. We are looking forward to a year of celebrations, and to continue going from strength to strength during our third century!”
