WELSH NATIONAL OPERA
Rosalind Plowright stars in
Khovanshchina
By Mussorgsky
Sung in English
Conductor Lothar Koenigs
Director David Poutney
Set designer Johan Engels
Costume designer Marie-Jeanne Lecca
Cast includes Robert Hayward, Alastair Miles, Peter Sidhom, Tom Randle & Peter Hoare
Possibly Modest Mussorgsky's greatest opera, Kovanshchina was unfinished at the time of his death, so this production employ's Shostakovich's scoring with the addition of a final chorus composed by Stravinsky in 1913. It is a work of immense power and humanity, set at the time when Peter the Great assumed power in Russia, a turning point in Russian history when old forces came into conflict with new. Political intrigue, religious persecution, the plight of a nation, all inform and effect intense personal love and tragedy.
Continuing WNO's acclaimed Russian Series- which includes the celebrated The Queen of Spades, Eugene Onegin and Mazepa- this is a rare operatic treat.
