Puccini's Madam Butterfly is one of Welsh national Opera's most loved productions and has been enchanting audiences since it was first performed '... Joachim Herz's 1978 productions of Madam Butterfly has proved almost unbeatable'. (Guardian) This tragic love story - with universal appeal - tells the heartbreaking story of a fragile geisha known as Butterfly and the American lieutenant Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton. Highlights include the tender Humming Chorus, the moving aria One Fine Day ('Un bel di') and the unforgettable Love Duet.
Madam Butterfly was Puccini's own favourite among his operas and even now - 100 years since its first performance - never fails to move an audience.
The cast includes Amanda Roocroft (who delighted audiences as Tatyana in WNO's Eugene Onegin and has just performed the role of Cio-Cio-San at Covent Garden) and Paul Charles Clarke (who gave a searing performance in the title role of Don Carlos) who returns as Pinkerton.
