By Bizet

Co-Production with Scottish Opera

Impulsive and fiery, Carmen shifts her passion from one lover to another, eventually with tragic consequences. The famous story of a Spanish gypsy girl who inspires a love that eventually destroys her is heightened by Bizet's feiry music, which includes the sultry 'Habanera' and the rousing 'Toreador's Song'.

On Carmen's opening night in March 1875, Bizet thought Carmen had been a failure - and sadly, this was the impression the composer took to his grave just three months later. However, Tchaikovsky, who caught the opera later in its run, prophesied that "within a decade Carmen will become the most popular opera in the whole world". He was right and it remains so to this day.

'Sara Fulgoni... sings with the smoky yet lustrous tone... She portrays an introspective gipsy, barely disguising vulnerability, acutely conscious of her own admitted devilry, deeply superstitious about her fate in the cards.' - The Sunday Telegraph

''A thoughtful, original production,... and one to remind you that as well as being one of the most popular operas, Carmen... is one of the greatest.'' - The Times
