'“…it does come south to Woking’s congenial New Victoria Theatre…and it really should not be missed. It is the most purely enjoyable staging of this comic masterpiece seen in the UK since Peter Hall’s classic production at Glyndebourne in 1981…Opera North’s 1960s psychedelia does Britten proud. MAKE SURE YOU CATCH IT.”' - The Sunday Times 'Opera North consistently comes up with ideas that expand audience tastes and challenge its own imagination' - Financial Times '*****' - The Times / The Independent / The Guardian 'A delight…How exhilarating to hear an audience convulsed with laughter in an opera house.' - The Times 'Best company of the year? Yet again, I'd plump for Opera North. I salute its courage & fresh thinking' - Daily Telegraph 'Dramatically engaging and musically rewarding, this Dream succeeds in marrying the work’s fantastical exuberance with its disturbing undercurrents and elements of farce, and is well served by the refined tone and translucent quality of the orchestra.' - The Independent Performances:

Magnificent Opera Opera North - A Midsummer Night's DreamBy Benjamin Britten sung in English Committed to producing high quality, exciting and entertaining shows, one of the UK’s leading opera companies, Opera North makes its inaugural visit to the New Victoria Theatre, presenting three thrilling and captivating new productions based on the much-loved plays of William Shakespeare. Out in the wood Oberon, the Fairy king and Tytania, his queen, are locked in a conflict that has turned nature upside down. In the city live two young women, one loved by two men, the other by none. When these four escape into the wood it’s their relationships that are turned upside down, so much so that they hardly know each other – or even themselves. By contrast, Bottom the weaver is always sure of himself, even when he’s been made an ass of… Few composers have matched music to words to such potent effect as Britten does in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In Shakespeare’s comedy the composer found themes close to his heart: night, dreams, the supernatural. He was inspired to write his most melodious opera, with a witty and utterly beguiling score. Martin Duncan has been responsible for some of Opera North’s most joyously theatrical occasions, including Orpheus in the Underworld and The Adventures of Pinocchio. Here he directs a production that promises to conjure a heady, intoxicated atmosphere where love is definitely the drug. Groups Discount Available Subscribe and Save!
