Trevor Nunn directs Shakespeare's classic

Hamlet

Hamlet, the student Prince, becomes a dangerous outsider trapped in a world of moral decadence which he despises and mistrusts. Set on revenging the brutal murder of his father, Hamlet's defiant quest for perfect justice drives him to the edge of madness.

The casting has been announced for Trevor Nunn's new production of Hamlet, which will begin previews on April 17 with an official opening April 27. This new production takes a fresh look at the play through contemporary eyes and Trevor Nunn has gathered an ensemble of the best of the country's young acting talent in order to do so.

“Something extraordinary happens when the characters who are students in Shakespeare's story are being played by people of exactly student age,” Trevor Nunn.

Ben Whishaw plays Hamlet and Ophelia will be played by Samantha Whittaker, with Imogen Stubbs as Gertrude with Tom Mannion as Claudius and Nick Jones as Polonius.

Trevor Nunn - the ex-Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre Artistic Director - first directed the play at the age of 17, with the amateur Ipswich Youth Drama Group. His last production with the RSC was in 1970, when Alan Howard played Hamlet and Helen Mirren played Ophelia.

Ben Whishaw will normally play HAMLET Tuesday to Saturday evenings and Al Weaver will normally play HAMLET on Mondays and matinees.
