The Dog in The Manger
by Lope de Vega
in a new translation by David Johnston
The Dog in the Manger, considered by many to be Lope de Vega's finest comedy is set in Naples, in the court of Diana, Countess of Belfour. Diana is a beautiful and headstrong woman who is beset by aristocratic suitors urging marriage upon her. She refuses all advances. However, one night, she discovers her favourite lady in waiting making love to her secretary, and is consumed by jealousy. A heartbreaking love triangle is forged, and so begins a story of forbidden love, envy and passion.
