HUMAN IMITATIONS
UK PREMIERE
Tue 13 March at 7.45pm
Tickets: £11 (Concs £8.50)
Festival Multi-Buy Discount: Save £2 per ticket when booking for 2 or more Festival events
Running Time: approx 80 minutes
Fizzing with originality and humour, Finland’s Jyrki Karttunen and his company of five male dancers perform expressive dance theatre experimenting with the idea of ‘being someone else’. Fascinated by reinvention, Karttunen looks at how we adopt roles through different imitations in our everyday lives. Visceral dance collides with illusionary magic in this quirky and vibrant piece, as characters dress up and down, adopt manneristic movements, wrestle, and float through the air, amplified with a techni-coloured musical score. This charming and high-spirited production from one of Finland’s leading choreographers, has entertained audiences across the globe.
Be the first to see this exclusive UK premiere in Woking.
‘Openly theatrical, entertaining, emotional and hilarious... an enchanting journey with surprising details and twists’
TANSSI MAGAZINE
‘One of the great conjurors of contemporary dance... deeply tickling humour and emotive stage-struck magic. Outstanding, plucky and lovely’

MATRIOSKA
UK PREMIERE
Sat 17 March at 11am
Tickets: £8 (Concs £5)
Family Ticket for 4 (£22 max 2 adults)
Festival Multi-Buy Discount: Save £2 per ticket when booking for 2 or more Festival events
Running Time: approx 45 minutes
For children ages 6-10 years old.
A mischievous tale of disappearing objects unravels with a journey of discovery and wonder in this magical duet choreographed by Portugal’s Tiago Guedes.
A young girl sets off on a camping trip, pitches her tent, crawls inside, and falls fast asleep. But when she awakes, she finds herself outside her tent, and swept into a wild and wonderful adventure. Transforming itself into a variety of guises – animal, vegetable and mineral – her magical tent unveils layer after layer of hidden secrets.
With scissors, scotch tape and buckets of creativity, Guedes conjures simple everyday objects into wonderful sculptures. Combining visual tricks, movement and mime, this inventive show taps into the imaginations of young audiences and celebrates the magic of live performance.

NIKI McCRETTON
MUTTNIK, THE FIRST DOG IN SPACE
Sat 24 March at 11am
Tickets: £8 (Concs £5)
Family Ticket for 4 (£22 max 2 adults)
Festival Multi-Buy Discount: Save £2 per ticket when booking for 2 or more Festival events
Running Time: 50 minutes
For children and ‘childish adults’ over the age of 3.
Muttnik is a stray dog living on the streets of Moscow. One day she is captured, and to her surprise, finds herself in a shiny new home with food, water and adventures better than dreams. She is living at the Russian Space Centre and has been selected to be the first dog in space! She learns to fly a rocket, to parachute jump, to dance in zero gravity and to go ‘where no dog has gone before’. Will she skate on the rings of Saturn, and what will be her first message home from the moon?
Niki McCretton brings us her imaginative slant on what happened to Laika, the dog the Russians sent into space aboard the rocket Sputnik 2 in 1957. An international sell-out show, this enchanting tale is told with dance, music and puppetry.
‘An engaging and versatile solo perfomer moving from exuberant Singing In The Rain-style dance to Cossack whirling... Frequently moving as well as fun’
EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS
‘Gorgeous... A beautifully thought through, very funny and resourceful piece of physical theatre that works for children and adults alike’ THE HERALD

DANCE AFRICA NOW
COMPAGNIE PREMIER TEMPS: IMPROVISÉ_2
IMED JEMAA: ROJLA
KEBAYA MOTURI: HISIA
3 UK PREMIERES
Wed 28 March at 7.45pm
Tickets: £11 (Concs £8.50)
Festival Multi-Buy Discount: Save £2 per ticket when booking for 2 or more Festival events
Running Time: 120 minutes (including 2 intervals)
Spanning North, East and West Africa, three stunning dance companies from Senegal, Kenya, and Tunisia are united in this triple bill, celebrating the rich diversity of African performing arts and its vibrant creativity.
Senegal’s Compagnie Premier Temps presents Impro-visé_2, a powerfully evocative duet observing the emotional strain of life on the streets in Dakar. Choreographer Andréya Ouamba has created an original and intense dance piece, which won the international competition at Danse L’Afrique in Paris. Possessing a yearning grace and raw muscular strength, two dancers mesmerize with every inch of movement, enhanced by a rich lyrical soundtrack of vocals and rhythm.
Hip hop dance has grown increasingly popular in Tunisia over the last 20 years. Award-winning choreographer Imed Jemaa transfers this urban dance form from the street to the stage in his new piece Rojla. Performed by seven athletic dancers, the piece evokes the atmosphere of the Maghreb Medinas with poetic tales of city life.
Kenyan dancer-choreographer, Kebaya Moturi performs his solo piece, Hisia (Swahili for ‘intuition’). Developing his own movement language fusing African and European influences, Moturi’s beautifully meditative work paints the stage with poetic texts, dance, and ritualistic movement.

DOUBLE BILL: DIALOGO / AEQUUS
Friday 30 March at 7.45pm
Tickets: £11 (Concs £8.50)
Festival Multi-Buy Discount:
Featuring live music, Brazilian dancer-choreographer Jean Abreu treats you to his original and tantalizing blend of Latin, capoeira and contemporary dance, with two new works.
Inspired by a visit to the Amazon, Aequus takes the audience on a vibrant journey into the heart of the Rainforest, rediscovering cycles of nature in a breathtaking fusion of live music, movement and text. In Dialogo dancer and musician explore the relationship between sound and movement in an innovative and intimate duet.
One of the UK’s hottest young dancer-choreographers, Abreu has won a string of awards for his strong, sensuous Latin inspired dance, including the prestigious Jerwood Prize. Fuelled by the infectious live rhythms of Brazilian music, five dancers ignite the stage with potent muscularity and feline grace.
Aequus was developed in partnership with and commissioned by DanceEast and the New Wolsey Theatre with the support of Arts Council England East.
‘Abreu has an easy flow of movement, giving a velvety softness to his most jagged of poses.’
THE INDEPENDENT ON RAIZES
‘Abreu has a wonderfully sensuous movement style. The choreography is intelligent and sensitive.’
