OPERA AT ITS EFFERVESCENT BEST
Jonathan Ansell as Nanki Poo, Nichola McAuliffe as Katisha and Sylvester McCoy as The Mikado star in
The Mikado
After a sell-out season at the Gielgud Theatre and an American tour, Carl Rosa Opera’s critically acclaimed production of
Gilbert and Sullivan’s evergreen show arrives in Richmond.
The Mikado is set in the magnificent but alarming Japanese court of Titipu, where plenty of colourful characters await –
Ko-Ko the Lord High Executioner, Pooh-Bah the Lord High Everything-Else, lovers Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum and, of course, the three little maids from school.
This hilarious tale of love, marriage and corruption in local government speeds merrily along, complete with executions, heroics, and some of G&S’s most infectious tunes.
Nichola McAuliffe, last seen here in Star Quality heads a sparkling cast which includes G4’s Jonathan Ansell and Sylvester McCoy, in this ‘most satisfactory’ production. And what better setting for it than Richmond Theatre – the very place where Topsy Turvy, Mike Leigh’s film about the writing of the opera, was filmed! Put this on your little list!
