MASTERPIECE DRAMA
The Glass Menagerie
By Tennessee Williams
Brenda Blethyn visits Richmond for the first time in this new production of Tennessee Williams’ semi-autobiographical first play. Its premiere at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre
earlier this year drew high praise for its superb ensemble acting and finely judged comedy.
Amanda Wingfield, a faded Southern belle who long ago lost both her fortune and her husband, clings to her memories of a genteel past when she once entertained seventeen gentleman
callers in an afternoon. Her ambition in life is to see her fragile, wallflower daughter Laura receive a suitor of her own. She and her son Tom, a would-be writer, arrange a visit. But when the reluctant beau arrives, their lives are changed forever.
Brenda Blethyn won Oscar nominations for Little Voice and Secrets & Lies, and her many other award-winning films include
Pride and Prejudice, Atonement and Saving Grace. TV credits
include Belonging, Outside Edge and Chance in a Million.
