The Secret Marriage
Domenico Cimarosa
Sung in English with English Supertitles
New production
A Scottish Opera Première
The Secret Marriage is Cimarosa’s most famous work and is a charming example of Italian operatic comedy. When it was first performed in 1792, Emperor Leopold II so enjoyed it that he invited all the participants back to supper, after which the performance was repeated.
The Secret Marriage continues to delight audiences across the world today. Its sparkling overture plays prelude to a comic whirlwind of deceit, rivalry, fickle affection and covert marriage.
The highly comic Geronimo has two daughters, Elisetta and Carolina, whom he believes are both single. Count Robinson is looking for a wife and it is hoped that he will fall for Elisetta. The Count however falls in love with Carolina (who is already secretly married) and all sorts of amusing complications get in the way of the ultimately happy ending.
Director Harry Fehr and Designer Tom Rogers, fresh from the success of Scottish Opera’s touring production of Cinderella, give you the opportunity to see a rarely presented and beautifully executed opera.
Soprano Rebecca Bottone, who gave a delightful performance in Scottish Opera’s recent production of Seraglio, sings Carolina and Renate Arends sings Elisetta. Scottish Conductor Garry Walker makes his Scottish Opera début.
