The Two Widows

Bedřich Smetana

Sung in English with English Supertitles

New production
A Scottish Opera and Edinburgh International Festival Co-production

Premiering at the Edinburgh International Festival, this brand new production stars Scottish soprano Kate Valentine and internationally renowned mezzo Jane Irwin.

Smetana’s folk inspired and melodic music is brimming with wit. He reveals a deep understanding of human foibles in this gentle tale of Bohemian country life in the late 19th century.

Karolina and Anežka are two young widows living within a castle in the Czech countryside. Both women have sharply contrasting attitudes to life. Karolina lives for the future, enjoying love, liberty and independence, whilst Anežka, though pressed by a suitor, cannot release herself from mourning and lives a life of isolation. Karolina conspires to change this situation and instigates a mischievous game of love and jealousy.

The opera is based on a French farce by Jean Pierre Félicien Mallefille, which Smetana transposed to the world of the Czech landed gentry. He set out to write an opera in ‘the distinguished salon style’ to show that the Czech repertoire could contain more than folksy or high-toned patriotic pieces.

The directorial partnership between Tobias Hoheisel and Imogen Kogge transforms this delicate comedy into something that digs deeper without losing its inherent charm. Francesco Corti conducts this, his first production as Music Director of Scottish Opera.
