Richard Alston Dance Company
Richard Alston, who this season celebrates the 40th anniversary of his first choreography, is widely recognised as Britain’s most musical choreographer - every step he makes is a esponse to a particular piece of music. The importance Alston attaches to music gives his
work a unique combination of accessibility and depth.
The Alston company’s 2009 appearances at the Theatre Royal, following their critically acclaimed visit in April 08, include two of Alston’s most explosive works. Blow Over is performed to Philip Glass’s exhilarating Songs From Liquid Days with lyrics by Suzanne Vega and Paul Simon. This isn’t Glass in cool, serene mood, oh no - this is music of mesmerising accumulative power, and the dancers have to fly to keep up, in great leaping arcs of energy.Blow Over was greeted by standing ovations and five star reviews at its recent World Premiere.
Also in the programme, a revival of Alston’s seminal Movements From Petrushka, to Stravinsky’s own pianoarrangement of his musicplayed live on stage by the remarkable young pianist Jason Ridgway.
