Glyndebourne on Tour - Carmen
By Bizet
Sung in French with English surtitles
The premiere of Carmen was considered a failure and denounced by critics as ‘immoral’ and ‘superficial’, yet the work is now widely recognised as one of the greatest operas of all time. Bizet wrote his finest music for the stage and in an age dominated by Verdi and Wagner, he was one of the very few composers to develop a genuinely individual style. When composing Carmen, Bizet moved as far away as he could from the traditional opera-comique that audiences of the time expected, incorporating an anti-heroine, disreputable female factory-workers, smugglers, immoral soldiers and a murder on stage. Infused with gypsy passion, this torrid tale of corruption, jealousy and obsession has been realised to exhilarating effect by director, David McVicar. McVicar describes Carmen as “the first ever musical”; his innovative approach to some of the repertoire’s most popular works, in partnership with designer Michael Vale, has had the effect of redefining and rejuvenating operas.
