Glyndebourne on Tour - Hänsel & Gretel

By Humperdinck

One of the world’s finest opera companies returns to Stoke-on-Trent with three exceptional productions, which offer a stunning variety of theatrical and musical styles. Audiences can be guaranteed the first-class quality of operatic performance that Glyndebourne on Tour is renowned for.

Premiered in 1893, Hänsel und Gretel is Humperdinck’s first opera and has been a constant and extraordinary success. Described by Richard Strauss as “a masterpiece of the highest quality”, the opera combines romanticism, lyricism and exuberant playfulness in vibrantly rich orchestration that is clearly influenced by the music of Brahms and Wagner. Like all great fairy tales, the story has darker underpinnings, evident in Humperdinck’s brilliant orchestral writing which accompanies the lost siblings’ journey through a shadowy world of unknown and limitless menace. One of France’s most talented opera directors, Laurent Pelly – whose recent production of La fille du régiment at the Royal Opera House received critical acclaim – makes his Glyndebourne debut.
