Othello Following its sell out run at the Swan theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon and a highly successful tour in Japan, RSC Associate Director Gregory Doran’s production of Othello will be the first production to perform at the newly refurbished Whitehall theatre, under its new name Trafalgar Studios. The Ambassadors Theatre Group (ATG) has redeveloped the Whitehall theatre to create an intimate and dynamic 380 seat theatre space in the heart of London. Trafalgar Studios will play host to a diverse and exciting range of plays throughout the year, launching with this RSC production. Othello will mark Gregory Doran’s third RSC London transfer in the last 12 months. He directed the double bill of The Taming of the Shrew and The Tamer Tamed which enjoyed recent success in the West End, as well as All’s Well That Ends Well with Judi Dench which recently extended its run at the Gielgud theatre. Last year, his project of four Jacobean plays, which performed at the Swan and then the Gielgud theatre, won an Olivier Award. RSC Associate actor, Antony Sher plays Iago. His recent RSC work includes roles in The Roman Actor and The Malcontent in the Olivier Award-winning Jacobean season, as well as the leading role in Gregory Doran’s productions of The Winter’s Tale, Cyrano de Bergerac and Macbeth (which was televised for Channel 4, and currently available on DVD and video). Antony recently appeared in his own play, I.D., at the Almeida and the extraordinary BBC 4 film, Home. Taking the title role and making his RSC debut in London is fellow South African actor, Sello Maake ka Ncube. An acclaimed actor in his home country, he last worked with Antony Sher in Gregory Doran’s production of Titus Andronicus at the world renowned Market Theatre in Johannesburg (1995). He recently played Mufasa in the West End production of The Lion King and directed Woza Albert! at the Riverside Studios. Lisa Dillon also made her RSC debut in the Swan with this production playing Othello’s wronged wife, Desdemona. Lisa has appeared in the Stephen Fry film, Bright Young Things, appeared in the BBC series Cambridge Spies and on stage played the title role in Iphegenia at the Sheffield Crucible and Hilde Wangle in The Master Builder, for which she recently won the Ian Charleson award.
